Chapter 16
The Perfect Dress
I fretted about what Dallas had said for the rest of the afternoon.
Did he mean it literally, that I was mouthwatering? What on Earth did that indicate, besides the obvious?
Did he want anything from me other than to drink my blood?
I had a serious physical reaction to Dallasâs scent. But I didnât want to drink his blood. I wantedâ¦well, I had no idea what I wanted.
Did Dallas intend to marry the winner of the Pageant? Or did he just want to have her for supper?
The answer would gauge how I was doing so far, compared to the rest of the contestants. But of course, I didnât know the answer.
My thoughts swirled as I ate dinner with Shaye. Refusing to linger on the subject, I tried to focus on our conversation.
âHow was the tea tasting?â
She crinkled her nose. âBloody boring. How was the fitting?â
âFine.â I stuffed another piece of popover into my mouth so I didnât have to lie more.
âI had my walk with the prince during the last ten minutes of the lecture.â Shaye played with her curls absently, looking dreamy.
I nearly choked. âHow did it go?â
She grinned. âGreat! Heâs really very nice, donât you think?â
I swallowed hard. âHeâs something, all right.â
My friendâs brown eyes focused on me. âDo you like him or not?â
I sighed. âI donât know. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.â That was the truth. âWhat about you?â
âI like him,â she said without reserve.
For some reason, my heart lurched at her words.
Shaye shrugged. âI had my doubts about the competition, but I think the prince is a good catch. Not just because heâs wealthy and powerful, but because heâs interesting and kind. And letâs face itâheâs hot.â
I put down my popover, feeling a bit sick. âHeâs handsome. Even Iâll give him that.â
âItâs okay if you like him too,â she said. âOne of us might have to marry him. We should both be so lucky to like him.â
I started tearing my napkin to shreds.
âGwyn, whatâs wrong?â
âItâs just that I donât want to like him.â I lowered my voice. âI feel guilty because of my family. I feel like a traitor.â
Shaye leaned forward. âWe all feel like that just by being here. And we all knew it coming to the palace.â
I nodded.
âThe thing is,â she continued, âwe all came anyway because we didnât have a choice. And one of us must marry the prince no matter what. Itâs better to like him, donât you think?â
âYes.â I agreed with everything she said.
âThen why do you still look so miserable?â
Because you said you liked him.
âIâm just confused, I guess.â
Shaye smiled at me. âThatâs good. Thatâs how you know youâre still human.â
